TeamDuke:
Glossary. Some of the
terms I use ('I' being Praetor PredAtor) may seem confusing. Use this
glossary to look up common terms, to recap on some of the tutorials, or
just to look up general information about Duke Nukem 3D:
More
entries may be added later.
ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZA
Armour Armour reduces damage
caused by enemy (or friendly) fire. Be careful - if your armour depletes,
so might you.
B
Boots
The Protective Boots
shield you from slime and lava. They do burn through quickly though. The
Boots activate automatically.
BUILD
BUILD is the official
Duke Nukem 3D MAP editor. It comes free on PC versions of the CD.
C
Chaingun
Cannon
See 'Ripper'
CTF
CTF is an abbreviation
for "Capture-the-Flag", originally a child's team game. These days, it
is a popular feature in computer games where a team of players must steal the
enemy's flag and return them to their own base in order to score, but
at the same time stop the opposing team from doing the same.
Cycloid
The Cycloid is another
name for the Devastator, strangely.
D
Devastator
Straight from the
Pentagon's top-secret labs comes this dual-barrel weapon of annihilation!
Unleashing swarms of small stinger missiles, it is guaranteed to leave
its mark! Close

DukeMatch
Usually
called 'DeathMatch' in other games. DukeMatch is the basic multiplayer
game type, where all players play Free-for-all with only one objective...
SHOOT TO KILL! Players get a point, or 'frag', every time they kill one
of the other players, and players lose a frag when they kill themselves,
or die from an environmental hazard - e.g. lava. A player respawns after
he/she is killed.
DUKE-TAG
This
was probably the first team-play game type available for Duke Nukem 3D
(Atomic Edition), where two teams had to breach each others' bases to
grab a Jetpack and a pair of Protective Boots in order to engage a shared
lava run.
E
Enhanced
DUKE-TAG
TeamDUKE's
enhanced version of DUKE-TAG. See 'DUKE-TAG' for more information.
Expander
See
'Microwave Expander'
F
FLAG-TAG
A
TeamDUKE Free-for-all game type. In this game, players must seek and hold
on to a golden flag hidden somewhere in the level. The first to hold it
long enough (usually 2½ minutes) wins. But there's a snag. While you hold
onto the flag, you lose 2% health every second; so move and find health!
If you get killed, either by being fragged by another player or your health
falling to 0%, the flag is dropped and you respawn elsewhere.
Free-for-all
All
versus all. Everyone works alone and everyone else is considered an enemy.
Freezethrower
An
ingenious and particularly nasty weapon which fires frozen nitrogen crystals
which can ricochet off solid surfaces. Upon impacting a biological form,
its target's body temperature plummets; and eventually, once cold enough,
its molecular structure freezes and becomes extremely brittle, so brittle
it smashes like glass!
Just
be careful that the ricochet doesn't cause the crystals to bounce back
in your face!

H
Holoduke
When
activated, it spawns a holographic replica of yourself. It doesn't move
or turn and projectiles pass straight through it; plus, it doesn't glow
under Night Vision Goggles (whereas real Dukes do). Nevertheless, it is
a good decoy for an opponent in a hurry to kill someone!
I
IR
Goggles
See
"Night Vision Goggles".
J
Jetpack
A
Jetpack allows Duke to hover and move vertically while activated (using
the "J" key). Just watch the fuel gauge, as the last thing you want to
happen is to run out of fuel while you are 500 feet above the ground!
K
Kick
When
you are drained of ammunition, this is your only means of defence, let
alone attack! Still, it's better than nothing. Close

L
Laser
Tripbomb
Another
invention from the Pentagon... a wall-mounted Laser Tripbomb! Once placed
on a wall, it emits an infra-red beam two seconds later (giving you time
to get out of the way). If the beam is tripped, the device explodes chaotically.
NOTE:
In TeamDUKE, the beam is invisible unless viewed under the heat-sensitive
night-vision goggles.

Lava
Run
The
lava run is the section of level in DUKE-TAG, usually a stretch of hyper-destructive
(purple) lava in the centre of "No man's land", which the teams' "runners"
must engage in order to score - although they have to complete other objectives
before they are able to.
M
Microwave
Expander
A
conversion of the Shrinker which allows it to emit deadly beams of microwaves
in rapid succession. If the target is exposed to too much of its deadly
radiation, it expands and explodes in a ball of radiation and a shower
of blood!
CAUTION:
In TeamDUKE, firing the Microwave Expander underwater causes the microwaves
to diffract, with YOU in the centre (don't try this at home, kids!) Close

Mighty

See
'Kick'.
N
Night
Vision Goggles
When
activated, dark areas are illuminated, allowing a safer passage through
gloomy caverns. Organic material glows extremely brightly under these
goggles, making them great for stalking opponents or spotting for snipers.
No
man's land
'No
man's land' is a term I use (in CTF and DUKE-TAG) for the area of level
between the two team bases, generally one of the most dangerous areas
for both teams.
P
Pipebomb
Throw
down the pipebomb and then detonate it with your handheld trigger! Unfortunately,
the Pipebomb is more of a Grenade in TeamDUKE. I'm still working out how
to re-enable the hand-held trigger, if anyone knows how please e-mail
me or post it on the forum. Close

Your
basic gun. Needs slow reloading every 12 shots, and doesn't do much damage.
Still, would you prefer this or your foot?! Close

Portable
Medkit
A
medkit that can be carried around and used at any time by pressing the
"M" key. When used, it heals you up to 100%, knocking off the percentage
of medical supplies equal to the amount of health required to boost you
back to full health. When initially picked up, it has 100% worth of health.
R
Respawn
Respawning
is when a player is 'resurrected' after being killed, but starting at
a designated point with only the basic pistol and the mighty foot.
Ripper
This
rapid firing gun is great for mincing enemies approaching you, although
it does eat up ammo rather quickly! Close

RPG
Launcher
The
RPG ("Rocket Propelled Grenade") Launcher fires a relatively slow moving
projectile which produces a devastating explosion on impact, great for
killing multiple enemies at once, including yourself! Close

S
Scuba
Gear
The
Scuba Gear allows you to breathe underwater for as long as its oxygen
supply doesn't run out. It activates automatically.
Shield
See
"Armour".
Shotgun
A
pump-action shotgun which takes a second or two to reload after each shot,
but the power it produces creates lasting damage on all who get in its
line of fire! Unfortunately, because of how the individual pellets are
dispersed, it is ineffective at long range. Close

Shrinker
Players
like to belittle their opponents and walk over them; with the Shrinker
you can do both simultaneously! This piece of captured alien technology
fires a slow moving ball of energy which shrinks its victim down to pint-size
for a few seconds. Then, you can stamp on them - delicious!
Although
it still does the proper job of shrinking your prey at long range, it
is unlikely you will have the time to run over and smear them over your
treads! Close

Note:
Players on Steroids can't be shrunk. Activating Steroids will de-shrink
an already shrunk player. Also, Shrink Rays reflect off mirrors.
Steroids
When
activated (press "R", by default), Duke will run extremely fast and have
a super-strong kick that puts Bruce Lee to shame. It also de-shrinks you
if you happen to fall prey to a shrink ray.
Once
activated, it can't be stopped until it runs out - then you can have to
find another Steroids bottle.
